The morphology of the female reproductive system of pupal and adult stages of Microplitis rufiventris and the ultrastructure of the ovaries are described and illustrated. Two morphologically distinct types of particles of nuclear origin, i.e., polydnavirus (PDV) and a virus-like filamentous particle (VLFP) were detected in the ovarian calyx fluid of the female wasp. It is likely that these particles are injected into the host during oviposition. PDV initiated replication in the calyx of mid-aged pupae and in pharate adults and were present throughout adult life. VLFP were only seen in the calyx fluid of newly emerged adults, and therefore observed after the PDV. Feulgen and methyl-green pyronin staining revealed the presence of DNA in both types of particles. The effects of injection of Spodoptera littoralis larvae with a combination of parasitoid viruses and venom of M. rufiventris females (CxFV) were investigated and the results were compared with two control groups, i.e., larvae injected with Pringle's saline (PS) and naturally parasitized larvae. CxFV-larvae showed significant declines (P<0.05) in food consumption, weight of ejected faeces and weight gain when compared with PS-larvae. However, naturally parasitized larvae (parasitoid egg+CxFV+ovarian protein) displayed a high significance score (P<0.01) in comparison with those of PS-larvae. The approximate digestibility (AD) values of S. littoralis larvae were positively affected as early as day 2 post-treatment by either injection of CxFV or parasitization. However, a reduction in AD was observed in both PS- and CxFV-larvae on day 3-7 in comparison with naturally parasitized larvae. In this study, over 100 phytoclimatic indices and other climatic parameters were calculated using the climatic data from 260 meteorological stations in a Mediterranean territory located in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula. The nature of these indices was very different; some of them expressed general climatic features (e.g. continentality), while others were formulated for different Mediterranean territories and included particular limits of those indices that expressed differences in vegetation distribution. We wanted to know whether all of these indices were able to explain changes in vegetation on a spatial scale, and whether their boundaries worked similarly to the original territory. As they were so numerous, we investigated whether any of them were redundant. To relate vegetation to climate parameters we preferred to use its hierarchical nature, in discrete units (characterized by one or more dominant or co-dominant species), although it is known to vary continuously. These units give clearer results in this kind of phytoclimatic study. We have therefore used the main communities that represent natural potential vegetation. Multivariate and estimative analyses were used as statistical methods. The classification showed different levels of correlation among climatic parameters, but all of them were over 0.5. One hundred and eleven parameters were grouped into five larger groups: temperature (T), annual pluviothermic indices (PTY), summer pluviothermic indices (SPT), winter potential evapotranspiration (WPET) and thermal continentality indices (K). The remaining parameters showed low correlations with these five groups; some of them revealed obvious spatial changes in vegetation, such as summer hydric parameters that were zero in most vegetation types but not in high mountain vegetation. Others showed no clear results. For example, the Kerner index, an index of thermal continentality, showed lower values than expected for certain particular types of vegetation. Parameters relating to the water balance turned out to be very discriminative for separating vegetation types according to the season or the month when water begins to be scarce. Thus, water availability in soils is a limiting factor for the development of vegetation in spring or autumn as well as in summer. As expected, precipitation and temperature discriminated the altitudinal levels of vegetation. Seasonal variations of pollution biomarkers have been studied in two populations of Corbicula fluminea (Müller) for 2 years. Clams were collected from the Sanguinet lake and the Dronne river (Southwest France), sites characterised by water of excellent and passable quality, respectively. Biological parameters studied were enzymatic activity (catalase, propionylcholinesterase, glutathione S-transferase, NADPH-cytochrome c reductase and NADH-cytochrome c reductase activities) and indicators of physiological (protein, carbohydrate, lipid and ash contents, fresh and dry tissue weights, condition factor) and reproductive (amount of oocytes present in gonads and clams incubating larvae in gills) status. Environmental parameters (e.g. water temperature, chlorophyll a concentration) were also monitored. Effects of site, sampling date and season (from spring to winter) were studied, as well as relationships between abiotic and biotic factors. Finally, an index of variability was calculated for each biomarker. Catalase, propionylcholinesterase, NADH-cytochrome c reductase and lipids experienced the most pronounced seasonal fluctuations, whereas glutathione S-transferase, NADPH-cytochrome c reductase and proteins suffered less pronounced ones. For some parameters, results differed depending on the site. Most seasonal changes were related to the reproductive cycle and/or water temperature. Implications of such variations in the use of pollution biomarkers in environmental surveys are discussed. 相似文献

Fifth-instar larvae of Manduca sexta were reared on artificial diet at 25°C. Daily measurement of the wet and dry weights of insects, food eaten and faeces produced, allowed the construction of detailed budgets for food and water economy.Approximate digestibility (AD) was about 60% both in dry weight and energetic terms. This did not change significantly on successive days of the instar, despite the very considerable changes that occur in the size of the insect and the amount of food eaten during the same period. Two indices of conversion efficiency (ECI and ECD) also showed only insignificant changes during this time. ECI and ECD were both very high: at their maximal values, ECI was 43% (51% in energy terms) and ECD was 72% (81% in energy terms).Correction of the nutritional indices for the presence of food in the gut reduced their value slightly in all cases.Most of the water requirements of the larva were provided by the diet. The estimated gain from metabolic water was between 3.5 and 10% of the total water input. Faeces accounted for most of the water lost from the body; under our conditions transpirational losses were very small. Almost half of the water taken up with the food was retained in the body.The gut contents are more hydrated than the food. The faeces contain less water than the gut contents. It is suggested that the caterpillars recycle water by absorbing it from the faeces and returning it to the contents of the midgut. A quantitative model of such water movement within the body is presented. The data provide indirect evidence that caterpillars may optimise the retention time of food in the gut (and thus the AD) in order to maximise the absolute rate of nutrient uptake from it. 相似文献

An assessment of the competitive indices in intercropping between cassava (Manihot esculenta) and bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) was conducted with the aim of increasing the productivity of these crops. For this purpose, three farmers preferred landraces of cassava (yacé, blêbou and six mois) and three morphotypes of gourd (dark green and round fruit, light green and round fruit, light green and long fruit) were used to test the three intercropping ratios (gourd:cassava with 6:42, 6:24 and 6:18). Intercropping systems were assessed by land equivalent ratio (LER), area time equivalent ratio (ATER), relative crowding coefficient (K), actual yield loss (AYL), aggressivity (A) and competition ratio (CR). LER, ATER and K values were greater than 1 for gourd-cassava (6:24). These findings indicate an advantage of intercropping for exploiting the resources of the environment. Canada mayflower (Maianthemum canadense Desf.), a rhizomatous, perennial herb, was the subject of a 2-year field experiment that examined two factors potentially
affecting fruit and seed production: pollen addition and ramet isolation. Ramets were either open pollinated or overpollinated
by hand to supplement natural levels. Rhizomes of the ramets were either severed, to prevent resource supplementation from
the genet, or left intact. Ramets that were overpollinated matured more fruits and more seeds than ramets that were open pollinated.
Thus, mayflower appears to have been pollen limited in both years. Ramets that were open pollinated and whose rhizomes were
severed matured as many fruits, seeds, and seeds/fruit as ramets that were open pollinated and whose rhizomes were left intact.
Ramets that were overpollinated and whose rhizomes were severed matured fewer fruits, seeds, and seeds/fruit than overpollinated
ramets whose rhizomes were left intact. It appears that at natural levels of pollination, mayflower ramets are physiologically
independent but as the level of pollen increases, mayflower ramets receive support from other parts of the genet.
